For those who may have missed my previous comments. I compiled and uploaded this so I could explain my love of Van-Gogh's art to a dear friend of mine and thought McLean's Stary Stary Night was perfect in helping to explain. The lyrics were strictly for the benefit of my Friend, who's first language is not English.I never imagined it would get so many views and comments. I'm so glad I was able to share.

One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Who else ever used a marimba and an accordion to convey such emotion?

If you listen to this with a sufficient amount of alcohol in your brain the tears will flow copiously.

Van Gogh's story was so, so sad, I think that is the saddest way to die, where you are so hurt, so depressed, so unhappy, and hopeless, to the point where you take your own life, thats why I hate 12 year olds say, "Kys" it's so sad.

    Vincent (Vincent van Gogh)

    Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and gray
Look out on a summer's day在夏日里出外探访
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
    Shadows on the hills
    Sketch the trees and daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land

Now I understand what you tried to say to me如今我才明白,你想说的是什么
How you suffered for your sanity
How you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how但他们却不理会,也不知该如何做
    Perhaps, they'll listen now也许,今后他们将会明了

    Starry, starry night
    Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
    Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
    Colors changing hue
    Morning fields of amber grain
    Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand

Now I understand what you tried to say to me如今我才明白,你想说的是什么

How you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how但他们却不理会,也不知该怎么做
    Perhaps, they'll listen now也许,现在他们知道了
For they could not love you因为当初他们无法爱你
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left inside
    on that starry, starry night当灿烂的星空里不存一丝希望
You took your life as lovers often do你像许多恋人一样,结束了自己的生命
But I could have told you, Vincent
    This world was never meant
for one as beautiful as you一个美好如你的人

    Starry, starry night
    Portraits hung in empty hall
    Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget
Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged man in ragged clothes
The silver thorn of bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know what you tried to say to me我想我已明白,你想说的是什么
How you suffered for your sanity
Then how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they're not listening still但他们却不理会,现在依然如此
    Perhaps, they never will…

Does anyone understand the parallel between Vincent, Jesus, and God? Don McLean describes Vincent, but the painting is about God watching over the city. Food for thought.

I love Don's recording, it is the first I heard. Has anyone heard Johnny Mathis sing this? He performed this at Bridges Auditorium in Claremont, Ca. a few years ago!! I have not been able to find it on record nor CD.raf

Having just read The Newest biog of Van Gogh by Steven Naifeh and Gregory smith which I highly recommend his story is even more remarkable because without his amazing sister in law Jo (my avatar, left) keeping his art after his death and her Husband Theo and without Theo keeping Vincent's letters Vincent would almost certainly be just a footnote in art history. It is thanks to Theo and Jo that we have such an incredible insight into Vincent's mind that makes sense of his Paintings. It, in my opinion is the Knowledge of his mind that makes his works so wonderful.
